PREPPING YOUR HOME, PARADE, AND AFTER-PARTY
Ah, St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah-a time when the city turns fifty shades of green, and the river flows with festive spirit (sometimes quite literally). If you’re planning to partake in the revelry, you’ll need a game plan.
Prepping Your Home (a.k.a. The Shamrock Sanctuary)
Before the bagpipes start playing and the beer starts flowing, make sure your home is parade-ready because St. Patrick’s Day is no longer a holiday, it’s a season!
- Decorate Like You Mean It– Wreaths, banners, and a sea of green lights will let your neighbors know you’re serious about St. Paddy’s. Bonus points for an inflatable leprechaun on your porch.

- Stock Up on the Essentials– Green beverages, hearty snacks, toilet paper, and plenty of water because no one ever just “stops by.”
- Secure the Valuables– The parade crowd gets lively, and post-party stragglers can be unpredictable. Stow away anything breakable or irreplaceable unless you want it to become a casualty of celebration, and lock-up if you leave for the parade

- Stake Your Spot Early– Parade-goers start claiming space before sunrise. Bring chairs, coolers, and your best tailgating game. If you can secure an invite to a friend’s home on the parade route-even better.
- Dress the Part– Green is mandatory, but creativity wins the day. Think kilts, shamrock sunglasses, and over-the-top hats.
- Mind Your Beverages– Open containers are allowed in the Historic District, but no glass! Plastic cups are your best friend.
- The Bathroom Situation-A Crisis in the Making If you live downtown, Your bathroom is about to be more popular than the beer tent at an Irish festival. Do yourself (and your plumbing) a favor by stocking extra toilet paper, hand soap, and maybe even a discreet sign that says, “If you break the toilet, you buy the house.” Because yes, it happens.

Once the floats have passed and the marching bands have played their last note, the real fun (or challenge) begins.
- Post-Parade Festivities– I highly recommend NOT going to River Street (my version of Hell on Earth) or City Market unless you love crowds of really drunk teenagers, college kids, and just overall drunk people.
- The Great Homecoming– If you’re hosting, expect an influx of revelers. Have a playlist ready, easy grab-and-go food, and plenty of libations!
- Clean-Up Tactics– The morning after, you’ll likely find confetti in places you never expected. Enlist friends for a quick cleanup session before the sun gets too high and your motivation too low.
Final Words of Wisdom
Patrick’s Day in Savannah is an event like no other, blending history, community, and good old-fashioned shenanigans. Whether you’re dancing in the streets, or hosting the after-party of the century, just remember: hydrate, pace yourself, and embrace the chaos.

Chatham County has updated its flood risk information, and new flood hazard maps are now available for review. The preliminary flood maps issued will replace outdated studies, some of which date back over 30 years. These revisions may impact residents and business owners in Chatham County, as well as the cities of Bloomingdale, Garden City, Pooler, Port Wentworth, and Savannah. You can check the new preliminary maps to see any changes in your flood risk, understand how they may influence building and flood insurance requirements, and explore your options at a Virtual Flood Risk Open House: https://www.georgiadfirm.com/VOH/

The Buck is the cocktail equivalent of a charming friend who shows up uninvited but makes the party ten times better. This easy concoction combines ginger ale (or ginger beer), citrus, and a splash of spirit. For St. Patrick’s Day, we give a hearty nod to Irish whiskey. It’s the perfect drink for whipping up a large batch, so you can keep the good times flowing without constantly playing bartender. Whether you’re celebrating St. Paddy’s Day or just looking to add a splash of cheer to a Tuesday, it’s a go-to favorite.
